Kerala Jewish Heritage Tour
The oldest of the Indian Jewish communities is in Cochin .They are called Malayali Jews because they lived in Kerala,south India (local language is Malayalam). But actually the first settlement of the Cochini Jews wasn’t in Cochin but a little north from Cochin in the town of Kudungallur (Ancient sea port formerly called Cranganore by Portuguese, Muziris by Romans & Greeks and Shingly by Jews).
The arrival time of the first Jews is not clear. But one fact is sure about the Cochini Jews, that they weren’t a single emigration. At different times Jews arrived and settled in south India at Kudungallur. According to one version the first forefathers of the Malayali Jews arrived in India during the King Solomon’s period (961 BC). King Solomon had commercial trade with Muziris. Second migration in 562 BC, and that more Jews came as exiles from Israel in the year 70 C.E. after the destruction of the Second Temple during the Exodus.
